The treatment consists of\na single high dose of radiation in 3 dimensions\nto a well-defined, small target area. It is\nfundamentally different from radiation therapy,\nwhich is more commonly known by the general\npublic and is used repeatedly over a period of\nweeks: radiosurgery does not use the\ndifference in sensitivity between tumor and\nhealthy cells, but induces slow tissue death in\nthe affected areas thanks to the high dose\ndelivered in one dose. Outside the designed\ntarget area, there is a sudden and significant\n(exponential) reduction in the radiation effect\non non-tumor tissue.<\/p>\n<p>This procedure is fundamentally different from\nradiation therapy, which is more widely known\nin the general population and is applied\nrepeatedly over weeks. Radiotherapy is based\non the differential sensitivity of tumor and\nhealthy tissues, which throughout several\nrepeated applications, preferentially affect\ntumor cells. In contrast, radiosurgery induces\ntissue necrosis in the affected areas by a high\ndose of radiation delivered in a single dose.\u00a0\nIn certain cases, radiosurgery can replace\nconventional open cranial surgery under\ngeneral anesthesia. The cases depend on the\ntype of the disease, whether it is defined as a\nfirst-line treatment, whether it can be used as\nan alternative to classical surgery, or potentially\nas a supplemental treatment. In contrast, the linear accelerator produces electrons, and the instrument itself\nmust move to ensure that the treatment spares\nas much non-tumor healthy tissue as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The &quot;rotating-system&quot; gamma knife used in\nDebrecen is a curiosity because the rotating\nsystem has the advantage over other gamma\nknives in that it spares even more non-tumor\ntissue.<\/p>\n<p>It is the primary technology used for\nneurosurgical purposes. In Hungary, only\nDebrecen has a rotating system stereotaxic\ngamma radiation device.<\/p>\n<p>The linear accelerator, an alternative\nradiosurgery device, emits electron beams\nproduced by an electric current: the treatment\nis done by accelerating the electrons and then\nusing their braking energy. This technique is\nbetter suited to tumors requiring lower doses\nand repeated irradiation, where precision\ntargeting is not a priority. The\nradiation dose delivered to the treated area\nmust be very high to achieve a destructive\neffect, but it must also ensure that the\nsurrounding tissues remain intact. The body is under less\nstress, the patient feels no pain and no\nanaesthesia is required at any stage of the\ntreatment.<\/p>\n<p>The tried-and-tested technology, developed\nover 40 years, is used in hundreds of centers\naround the world to save patients weeks of\nrecovery time from traditional brain surgery\nwith excision.<\/p>\n<p>Gamma radiosurgery is a specific,\nmultidisciplinary skill requiring many years of\nmedical experience in neurology, neurosurgery,\nradiology and oncology. Radiation planning also\nrequires the continuous presence of a physicist.<\/p>\n<p>Another positive aspect of radiosurgery is that\nit can be combined with other treatments and\ncan be integrated into any oncotherapy. Often,\npatients' poor general condition is not an obstacle to treatment, unlike the many criteria\nfor open surgery, which can be delayed or not\nperformed at all (e.g. blood count, concomitant\ninternal diseases, medications).<\/p>\n<p>At the Gamma Radiosurgery Center in\nDebrecen, patients are treated within the\nframework of one-day care with short waiting\ntimes. Permanent\nprofessional staff is in place to ensure\nprofessional standards of care: after more than\n5,000 successful procedures, the number of\ncases means that this institution has the most\nexperience in the field of radiosurgery of\nintracranial lesions in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The follow-up protocol requires regular check-\nups after the treatment.
