With these treatments\nusually take between 20-40 minutes. This can\nvary depending on the type and size of the\nlesion, in some cases, can be up to 1.5-2 hours.<br \/>The procedure involves preparations that\nrequire a one-night hospital stay, and after the\ntreatment, the patient can only be discharged\nwith an escort.<br \/>Accommodation is available for\nthe escorts at the clinic or in the city and the\ncost involved are agreed with everyone\nbeforehand. It is required for\nthe preparation for planning the radiosurgical\nprocedure. <br \/>A combined MRI-CT image is generated with\nthe use of a contrast-enhanced CT scan on the\nday of the treatment to image the lesions in as\nmuch detail as possible. The combined image is\nused to define the spherical target irradiation\nareas of the treatment.\nThe patient needs to spend the night at the\nhospital, so that preparations can begin early in\nthe morning on the day of the treatment.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a2a91b4 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a2a91b4\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-extended\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-44f49c7\" data-id=\"44f49c7\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dad9ed5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-elementskit-heading\" data-id=\"dad9ed5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"elementskit-heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"ekit-wid-con\" ><div class=\"ekit-heading elementskit-section-title-wraper text_left   ekit_heading_tablet-   ekit_heading_mobile-\"><h2 class=\"ekit-heading--title elementskit-section-title\"><span>Preparation:<\/span> frame attachment to ensure\nsecure positioning of the head<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<div class='ekit-heading__description'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Early in the morning on the day of the\ntreatment, the nurse specialist of the Gamma\nRadiosurgery Center places a cannula in the\narm of the patient for the contrast-enhanced\nCT scan. <br \/>The patient is only allowed to drink\nnoncarbonated water from the morning on because the treatment needs to be done on an\nempty stomach. <br \/>To ensure accurate targeting, the head of the\npatient is securely fixed to the treatment device\nso that the gamma rays only reach\npredetermined locations of the lesion. <br \/>The fixation is ensured with a stereotaxic frame,\nwhich also serves as a 3-dimensional coordinate\nsystem for radiation surgery planning.<br \/>The contrast-enhanced CT scan for radiation\nsurgery planning is already taken with the\nframe attached to the head of the patient,\ntherefore the frame attachment is done in the\nCT operator room of the Department of\nNeurosurgery.<br \/>The frame is attached to the skull at four points,\non two sides of the back of the head and two\nsides of the forehead. A local anesthetic is\napplied before the application of the fixation\nscrews through the skin. The neurosurgeon designs\nthe course of the treatment using a dedicated\ncomputer to determine the 3-dimensional\ncoordinates of the target area in relation to the\nstereotactic frame on the head of the patient.\nThe same procedure defines the size of the\ntarget area and the radiation dose to be\ndelivered during the treatment. The physicist\nconfirms the coordinates and the dose rate to\nensure the accuracy of the procedure.\nThe planned dose depends on the histology of\nthe disease, the size and location of the area to\nbe treated, and the dose delivered in potential\nprevious radiation treatments. The frame attached to the skull of the\npatient is inserted into the frame holder to\nprevent the head from moving during the\ntreatment; and to ensure that the radiation\nbeams converge precisely on the target area to\ninitiate the process of tumor tissue necrosis.<br \/>During the treatment, the patient is alone in\nthe treatment room, but they are constantly\nmonitored by video cameras and can\ncommunicate with the personnel via a built-in\nmicrophone. For the the complete treatment of\nthe lesion, the machine might have to be\nrepositioned several times during the\nprocedure. The\npatient is provided information on the date and\nprocedure of the follow-up diagnostic imaging.\nAt this point, the patient is allowed to eat, and\nafter a few hours of observation, in most cases,\nis discharged home the same day. For the\ndischarge, an escort needs to be present to\nensure the safety of the patient leaving the\ncenter.
